The mysteries and inner revelations are constantly revealed so my commentary here is just a snapshot of one point in my relationship with this chant as it constantly grows and changes all the time. My enlivenment and reason for being in this body are due to my Guru and I constantly and daily think about that relationship by chanting this incredible and insightful sanscrit prayer and chant. This chant if nothing else is a true reminder of the truth in all things.

Verse 1

Om namo gurubhyo gurupadukabhyo

Namah parebhyah parapadukabhyah

Acarya-siddhesvara-padukabhyo

Namo namah srigutupadukabhyah

Om - The buzz, the background, the primordial hum.
Samadhi is the natural state of your mind. Samahdi is not supernatural. It is a matter of your own choice as to whether you learn samahdi or not. The Mind Attains samahdi. Serenity a and Clarity of Mind then Reflects The Self.

What you do and don't do have a lot to do with whether you purify your mind and then like a mirror reflect the Inner Self.

Okok, but I don't want a lot of rules here...I just want to be calm and live in unadulterated light...

1. Well, it's been my experience that if you stop hankering after things that aren't absolutely essential, then it helps your own mind to constantly stop "looking for something else". So this creates kind of an inner purity. For instance: I am at work and I sit at a desk and computer all day. We have 3 breaks to get up and walk around and get food during these times. Picture this, its tea break in the morning and someone has brought in gooey yummy pastry's and they are sitting on the counter. Since part of me is hungry and I know I have 2 1/2 hours till lunch, I might want to treat myself with one of these poofy things. I have a nice whole wheat bagel with me and some carrot juice which is ultra good for me but my mind wants something that tastes good but has no nutritional value. Now don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with eating a pastry and I don't want a rule...you can 't eat pastry...thats not what I want...I want to have Basic essentials in my life and I want my mind to stop going down the pastry road. So, if I stop hankering after the pastry and just have what is essential... then my body doesn't get indigestion or sugar shock (which I sometimes forget and then eat a pastry and it sets me back because all I am thinking about is...oh my I need a Tums and don't I feel awful). So, this is a really silly little basic illustration but if I just keep to what is essential and forgo the pastry then I a set up a simpler situation for myself in which it is easier to maintain my purity and clarity. I mean think about it, there are so many moment to moment situations where you can choose to get upset or to be calm and that choice is the choice between samahdi and not being in samahdi. The big thing, is when you are tired and you ate the pastry and then something blind sides you such as the IT guy wanting to delete all your files because there is no more room on the server and you are busy and have no patience for his deal or your husband calling you with some drama you can not change from where you are sitting at work then that time is the TEST. Samahdi or not samahdi..... The spoiled child inside you doesn't always choose the samahdi thing.... but if anything.....just start watching yourself and look at the moment to moment choices you have everyday... It can be like a game and a way for you to challenge yourself to yourself and choose the highest and best path at any given moment. When I was staying in Gurumayi's ashram, sometimes there would be thousands of people there and they would all want to see and experience Gurumayi. It must have been like a swarm of bees looking for the honey. Everyone was there for the honey and she was the honey. I watched her for over 10 years and I never once saw her not in a pure and clear state even with people pulling at her gown and chasing her down an aisle. I used to ask myself "how does she do that"? I am sure a lot of it was Grace but you probably create your own grace by your moment to moment choices and her moment to moment choices were very considered and pure. So just watching her, I know it is possible even if I think it is impossible for myself, I have little victories with myself here and there and glimpse samahdi. At least I know it IS possible but so much of it is self effort. It seemed for years that Gurumayi's grace was carrying us all and she was doing all the work. I really think she wants us to do our own moment to moment choices in our own sadhana. I thank her for the opportunity to spend time with her so at least I have an example and at least it is permanently installed on like a million levels inside me.

2. Breathing is big here. You know you won't be able to get thru your hatha yoga class without smooth breathing but hardly anyone ever talks about your own natural pranayama and how you breath on a moment to moment way through out your day. It is almost like breathing stops when you leave the yoga class. Breathing and Restlessness go hand in hand and restlessness is the enemy. Your asana and posture and breathing have everything to do with your own restlessness. The Power of your Breath can make you still and this power of asana is the power of inner stillness. Life is so much like the ocean, one day it is calm and one day it is rough. How do I maintain the inner oceanic calm at any given moment? Well, its all about will....who knew will was such a big deal in the spiritual life? Calm breathing - will yourself to calm breathing....spend time everyday practicing calm breathing....

3. Control of Senses...oh my...we are getting back to the pastry thing here aren't we? Okok, facilitate the withdrawal of the senses a bit everyday. That is the sitting for meditation part. Teach your mind to concentrate by practicing being calm and breathing. Pratyahara it is called. Center the Mind.

4. Repeat the Mantra...Om Namah Shivaya...there are two kinds of repetition and again there shouldn't be some type of big rule with your mantra. There is "Darana" which is repeating the mantra in a broken flow...For instance, you only start saying the mantra in those challenging situations like the IT guy is taking apart your computer and you won't be making any commission at your job today because of it. Okok, at least I was saying the mantra to try and calm myself even if I was starting to get upset.... The other kind of mantra repetition is: Dhyana which is uninterrupted flow. Eventually and sometimes in spite of yourself, the dhyana thing happens all the time if you spend a bunch of time practicing it. I try not to beat myself up about this cause your own body is sating the Ham Sa or So Ham mantra like 26,000 times a day anyway which your breath going in and out...I mean mantra and samahdi are always there ANYWAY. It is just aligning yourself to it at any given delusional moment.

5. Teach the mind to concentrate - Cultivate Meditation and Yoga in your life. Offer everything to God, even your crappy job that you hate, your selfish family members, your old car, your long days at work, all the laundry, the dishes in the sink, the dirty floor, the jerks you work with, the guy who cuts you off on the way to work, and your own negative mind...Offer it up...Let it go... This is called surrender and the word surrender is not always about "ignoring" all the bad things. It's about the battle of fighting like a warrior all of these things so you can maintain your yoga, breathing, concentration and samahdi. Why do you think all the gods and goddesses have all those arms and weapons....It is war...Have a war on all the things that keep you from equipoise and equilibrium.

6. Doubts are like your worst enemy..these are the worst obstacles....doubts offend your own samahdi...they block the very source of your own meditation... When it comes to doubts, I have one piece of advice "God Loves You and You Love God, God dwells within you as your own Self" if you have doubts try to be at least appreciative of the gift of your own life to experience god. it is such an amazing opportunity. Remember, Kundalini energy burns the samscaras (past karmas that keep you from knowing you are god) so you CAN receive the Light of God. Try to allow the power of your own inner revelations give you the grace to see the reflection of your own self in the peace and calmness of your own self. Understanding the value of our experiences can take a long time so don't try to force it. Understanding is like a booby prize....in the end who cares whether you understand...understanding can block your own samahdi by tying you in knots with modifications of trying to wrap yourself around your own mind. It ties you in knots and that keeps the ocean churning....not always a peaceful day on the inner ocean if you are worried about understanding everything.

Remember, You can have a Great meditation, if you don't try to have a Better Meditation. revel in your own experience, enjoy yourself...cultivate the enjoyment of yourself and your own calmness and equipoise. Om Namah Shivaya

Life is guaranteed to be chalanging. There is no doubt about it. Consider each thought, screen it 2 x before that thought reaches the tip of your tongue. Everything is hills and valleys. It is hard to remember but it is very true, The devine energy really is within you. The cravings of the world are satidfied by the inner world. Satified by Meditation. Think about it. We are always bargaining with the world. I will be happy...if...I will love you...if...This type of love brings suffering to others. Try to separate the world bargaining thing from the separate devine impulse or vibration that exists at all times within you. Quiet down to absorb it. Meditation is absorbing that energy. Keep your profound affection and love for others burning as a pure flame in your meditation so that same love doesn't bring suffering to others. Problems never end but your does does stay pure. Notice the purity, imbibe the purity. Be one with it, as much as you can. Why wait for final attainment when it is available right now. Meditate on what it must be like to be a siddha. What was the state of Bhagwan Nityananda? Become that state even for a moment. A fraction of a moment.

Do you think your day is separate from your search for samahdi? If you are eager to attain samahdi you have to use restaint. Your lifestyle has to have restraint. Everything has an influence on our mind and when we restrain our minds by stilling the thoughtwaves, then the great state of pure love is waiting inside of us and is more easily accessible. Holding god dear in our hearts all of the time will contantly restrain the mind, the god is always bubbling up. You keep yourself clear. Very easy to talk about, a challange to do it.

It helps to separate the worldly bargaining and business deals from pure compassion and love. How do we keep our profound affection and love for others burning like an open flame, a pure flame? How do we keep our love from bringing suffering to others? Keeping Love Pure. Meditate without desires and imbibe and reflect on these qualities seems to bring you closer and in tune with the devine energy within.

Hello.

I have a question.I have 27 bead wrist mala,and i want to begin chanting mantra"om namaha
shivaya".My question is,once i finish my mala with this mantra,can i chant other mantra,for
different purpose, like "Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha, using the same wrist mala?or there is different and special wrist mala, for each mantra?

thank you very much. Robert

Hi Robert,

Thank-you for your question.

It is a very interesting contemplation.

If you think about what a mantra is...the bija sounds of the universe...the unadulterated pure qualities of the vibrations making up this universe then you already know they are all mixed up and happening simultaneously in everything all the time anyway. The rishis 1st heard the sacred seed sounds and distilled them into physical being for our enjoyment and upliftment. Truly speaking, using the mala to remember them and bring them into our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual sphere is an incredible blessing. Whether we try to keep Om Namah Shivaya only on one mala and Hari Krishna on another seems sort of incidental because your own thought patterns and physical location are ultimately going to affect the vibration of your malas. But having said that, I think that you may be onto something within yourself. Maybe its a good idea for you to try to keep separate malas for separate chants and see what the qualities of each mala do for your own spiritual upliftment. It seems like a very good idea to me. I know for myself I don't like it when I have a mala on in public and people always grab them and want to touch them. I like to keep the vibration going in a state I am comfortable with and feel the shakti in....I tend to keep them more secretive after many years of having them. I know many yogis hide their malas in bags and don't even let someone else look at them. It sort seems like hording your money or not sharing but I think you can be discriminatory. Once I let a girl at the beach hold my rudrakasha neck mala and she had a kundalini awakening afterwards. I didn't try to give it to her but she really wanted it. It is like people are hungry to find themselves and if you help them, then great but you can't go advertising that you can do this stuff or you set yourself up for some wierd trips. I digress.... Yes, I think if you are guided to keep different malas for different chants then you should do it! Why not, seems like a wonderful exercise and a way of infusing your spirit with the chant as much as possible. I am not a "rule" person and I don't think there are big rules for mantras. They have a mind of thier own and do what they want in spite of us. You don't do them, they do You!

I can tell you that I do not keep separate malas for separate chants because mostly Om Namah Shivaya is going on within and without me all the time so even if I say something else it pretty much doesn't matter if I say ham sah or the gayatri instead. Om Namah Shivaya is suffused in every cell and repeating itself constantly. It is kind of like when you are at the beach and the sound of the waves is this symphony of Om Namah Shivaya and the wind is saying Ham Sah. You can't tell the ocean and the wind to be separate. They will be what they will be. The mantra symphony is occuring in your body with your breathing and your blinking automatically without you even trying to do it. As long as you are noticing and remembering the mantras then you are hearing the music of the spheres and bringing the energy or shakti of it into you life, being, and world. How wonderful! Thank-you for the very beautiful question. I wish you so very much good luck and good vibes for your sadhana. Please let me know how it all works out for you.

With Love, Melissa

There is only one great conciousness in this universe and its a big leap in your day to day life to understand that this conciousness is not in the melodramas of your mind. It instead is so easily known that there is a region of conciousness behind your own thoughts. Meditation burns the thoughts by turning awareness away from those thoughts (this is the sacrifice part) to the mantra. Sometimes when I want a quick fix to tune into the truth, I let my mind think about my heart and my heart expands and rotates. The petals unfold and I let the energy of this feeling pervade my body and my conciousness. Instead of getting caught up in the mind, I turn the mind over to the blooming heart. If I am paniced or overwhelmed and really in need of help, I can see the heart as a great fire (fire of yoga) and I set my thoughts ablaze. This is my essential surrender or sacrifice. Push away fear, it is not your friend, when you are trying to attain samahdi. Cause thats what you are doing, attaining samahdi. That is samahdi...pushing awayt fear and letting your heart maintain and equal balance in your conciousness. All I know that is it is important to have courage and compassion with yourself. Don't try to hard, let it come to you like in a game. Just think about it, play with it. Enjoy it. The shakti is now and forever. Grace and Effort are yours. Surrender and Faith reside in your own self. The rememberance is in the picture of perfection. Pick a picture of perfection. Your teacher, a sunset, a vista, or a loved one. Fix your mind on perfection, use the supreme words, Om Namah Shivaya" this reminds yourself of where the shakti or energy comes from. Two wings of the bird as grace and effort. The grace comes from remembering the intention of your teacher. The sankalpa. Sacrifice the thinking thinking thinking thoughts to the power of God's grace and go to your heart and hang out there.

There is no sin if you do Japa all the time. Purify yourself by repeating the mantra. Attain a state of equalibrium. Be even, impartial, no axes to grind. Be zealous, not jealous.
